Drive Change

Our democracy can make life better for regular people, but it takes a lot of work. There is a bunch of money and power out there and not much of it is working for the side of good. But when passionate people get together and get organized, we can make our communities stronger, fairer and more sustainable.

How we’re making it happen

Small Donor Elections

We’re building a system where everyone can participate, and where young people’s voices are heard over those of wealthy special interests and corporate lobbyists. We want to see more young people, more women, and more people of color in office, and we think the only way to do that is to make our elections more fair.

Lowering the Voting Age

Lowering the voting age to 16 is a bold idea to strengthen our democracy. We know that when people develop civic habits at a younger age, they’re more likely to stick. Research from this country and others suggests that lowering the voting age can improve voter turnout, spur civic engagement, and encourage effective civic education.

Paid Postage

Every eligible voter deserves to exercise their right to vote free of barriers, whether they live in Pendleton or Portland, Klamath Falls or Coos Bay, and no matter their age or ability. We want to make sure that every voter can participate by passing paid postage for all ballots.

Past Successes

Automatic Voter Registration

The Bus led the effort to pass Automatic Voter Registration (AVR) at the DMV in 2015, and over 400,000 Oregonians have been registered to vote since then. We want to do better, so we’re working to expand AVR to even more state agencies. We won’t stop until every eligible Oregonian has the opportunity to register to vote!

Voter Pre-Registration

One of the biggest barriers to voting is registration. By getting young pre-registered to vote before they turn 18, we’re helping build good habits and strong voters. The Bus led the charge for pre-registration in 2007 and again in 2017, and as of January 1, 2018, all eligible 16 and 17 year-olds can pre-register to vote!

Online Voter Registration

Can you imagine a time when you couldn't register to vote online? We do! In 2008 we helped pass online voter registration. In addition, we also worked with Oregon Students and OSPIRG to pass voter registration accessibility requirements for all high schools in Oregon.
